Welcome & Introductions

Teresa called the meeting to order. Attendees introduced themselves and shared the one item that they don’t have already that they would like to own.

Teresa made a motion and was seconded to amend the agenda to include the item “NOverdose HCSO Opioid Campaign”.  Motion carried.

A motion was made and seconded to approve the March minutes. Motion carried.

Chasing the Dragon: Viewing & Discussion

Teresa noted that the FBI and DEA collaborated to produce the movie.  The objective of the movie is to educate the public of the opioid epidemic.  The video has a discussion guide component and can be used in secondary schools.

Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek started a coalition to address the opioid crisis in our county.  The sheriff’s office wants to collaborate with school districts and coalitions to host town hall style meetings with a panel of experts to address the issue.  His office has contacted ISD 279 with hopes of hosting an event.  Members discussed collaborating with the sheriff’s office and ISD 279 and agreed the best time would be in the fall of 2017.  Members feel it is important to help craft some of the questions asked of panel members and to ensure there are actionable items for attendees to take-away.  Actionable items should include:   medicine take back sites, Expanded-Social Host Ordinance efforts, patient advocacy with physicians, and education on Naloxone/Narcan, among other items.  The coalition will work with the sheriff’s office on dates, content, and promotion.

One-on-one Interviews

LeeAnn noted we are on track to have 23-24 interviews completed. Linda Bosma will be at our May meeting to present the results.

Future Meeting Locations & Topics

Our next two coalition meetings are scheduled at Osseo City Hall. Teresa proposed continuing to meet at this location through the end of the year. Members agreed that this is a relatively central location. Amber can send a survey monkey at the end of the year to determine our 2018 meeting location.

Community Partner Sharing
  • Teresa shared that there have been two recent overdose deaths of MGSH graduates in the last week. Four alumni have passed away from overdoses in the last 4 years. Further evidence of our need to continue this work in the community.
  • LeeAnn shared that there will be a media event to reveal the medicine take back boxes in Minneapolis PD’s 1st & 4th precincts. They are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, April 27th. LeeAnn will send an email to the steering committee when the date is confirmed.
